1 /5 Alice Tylock: After my brothers funeral last Saturday at Holy Cross church, it confirmed for me the reason why I left the Catholic church in the first place.
There was precious little warmth or genuine concern for my family. The woman who was acting the part of a drill sergeant was unfeeling and abrupt with several members of my family including me. This woman refused to allow my aunt to to look over the reading that she was going to read at the funeral service. She told her "Its up there, youll see it when you get up there." When my aunt did get up to the podium to read her reading this woman stepped forward and whispered in her ear "Dont go off script."
The priest, during his homily, mentioned that my brother Matt had escaped the ravages of age by dying young. The priest who said this had to have been in his 90s because he fell asleep several times during the course of the funeral. I was very offended.
The only member of my band that plays at Irondequoit United Church of Christ who also happens to be a practicing Catholic, asked me the next morning at church "What was up with that homily?" The homily had virtually nothing to do with my brother, at least what I could hear of it. Part way through all of the speakers on my side of the church went out.
Over all, the experience was all together disappointing.
