Bronx Zoo - Bronx LL: I recently visited the zoo for the first time and had an amazing experience! I went on a Wednesday, which is their free admission day—a huge bonus. The process to get in was smooth, and I was pleasantly surprised by how large and well-kept the grounds were. I spent about 3 to 4 hours exploring and could’ve easily stayed longer. The animals looked well cared for, and there were plenty of exhibits to enjoy—from big cats and bears to birds, reptiles, and aquatic life.
One thing I really appreciated was how family-friendly the zoo felt. There were lots of shaded areas, benches, and open spaces to rest or take photos. The staff was also friendly and helpful, and even though it was a free day, the park never felt overcrowded.
Pro tip: definitely bring your own lunch! There are designated picnic areas and plenty of space to sit and eat. Food prices inside are typical for a tourist spot (a bit high), so packing a meal is a smart move. Another great thing—bags aren’t checked, so you can bring snacks, drinks, or even a small cooler with no problem.
All in all, I had a great time and would absolutely go again. Whether you’re going with kids, friends, or solo, there’s something for everyone. Free Wednesdays are such a great opportunity to enjoy a day out without spending a lot of money. Highly recommend planning a visit!
Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center - Bronx Jakob W. Plummer: An incredible and beautiful way to spend a day, just a stones throw from most spots in NYC. (A couple stops on metro north for roughly the same price as a subway ride)
The gardens are well kept and the crowds are not a thing. Quiet and peaceful walks through the conservatory or art instillations. It’s all really so lovely and an under appreciated adventure compared to similar gardens and cultural centers around.
Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum - Bronx MaJo Espejo: The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum and Gardens is a hidden gem that demands a full day of exploration! Nestled far from civilization, youll want to leave your deli cravings behind—no sandwiches or takeout in sight. Instead, indulge in the serenity of the gardens, where Ive witnessed meditative souls spending hours in quiet contemplation.
This historic estate unfolds the tales of the Bartow and Pell families, along with their loyal servants and assorted visitors, all intertwined in a rich tapestry of history. Don’t miss the mansion’s show-stopping coral-shaped staircase and the charming peacock statues that grace the gardens.
Inside, the rooms are beautifully decorated, but beware: the third floor has a mind of its own when it comes to temperature—hotter than a sauna in summer or chillier than a winter’s night, depending on your timing!
Take your time and consider joining one of the free tours included with admission—theyre packed with delightful surprises. For the full experience, weekends are best; that’s when you can peek into the stable, too! And don’t hesitate to pepper the docents with questions—they’re treasure troves of information.

New York Botanical Garden - Bronx Nikitriy: Lovely, partly peaceful place. I give it five stars even though I think that Brooklyn Botanical Garden is better. Its a pretty big botanical garden, but I was expecting much more flowers and plants. My favorite part is the rose garden, its magnificent! The garden has a lack of food places( ice cream, water for example). The restrooms are clean( its kind of rare in NY). The library there is stunning, such a beautiful architectural building. In general, amazing place for everyone who loves nature and beauty.
Pelham Bay Park - Bronx JonPaul Niang: If you thought Central Park was big, you need to come to this park immediately. With a large track and field area that puts Soundview Parks to shame, easy accessibility from the 6 train, free parking, a bunch of pathways to walk along and enjoy the sights (especially now that its Autumn), a few nice statues to look at, a big playground, a number of different sports courts, and a bunch of areas to sit down and have a barbecue with your family and friends. Great views of the water and city skyline as well, especially a bit closer to nighttime. You cant even see all of the park in one day unless you wanna challenge yourself. Not only that, I felt very safe during my walk through the park, and others that Ive encountered have been quite friendly. 10/10 park and highly recommend it.
Rockefeller Fountain - Bronx Krishna Sudarshan: The Rockefeller Fountain, situated in the Bronx Zoo, is a breathtaking Italian masterpiece crafted by sculptor Biagio Catella in 1872. Originally located in Como, Italy, it was purchased by William Rockefeller in 1902 and installed at the zoo in 1903. This three-tiered, octagonal fountain features an extensive sculptural program with sea creatures, mermaids, and mermen, all carved from Bianco Pi Italian marble. Designated a New York City landmark in 1968, it is a testament to the citys rich cultural heritage. The fountains serene setting amidst the zoos lush surroundings makes it a popular spot for photography and relaxation. Its intricate details and historical significance have captivated visitors for decades, offering a unique blend of artistry and tranquility in the heart of the Bronx. The fountains story, from its tumultuous past in Italy to its current status as a beloved NYC landmark, adds to its allure.
Poe Park - Bronx Shelby Hill Tatarian: If you like history and/or American Literature and/or poetry, its pretty cool to see the house where Edgar Allen Poe lived, and by extension how the Bronx must have looked in the 1800s. They were doing renovations when we were there in June 2021, so we didnt get to go into the little museum or get close to the house. Theres also a playground nearby for kids!
Clason Point Park - Bronx JonPaul Niang: For an average sized park, this one has quite a lot going for it. Its main area is quite nice to walk through, with benches where you can sit down to eat any food you brought with an absolutely gorgeous view of the city skyline and the Whitestone Bridge, and you can access the NYC Ferry from this area as well. The other area is also rather nice, with an athletic field, a playground (that had most of the swings gone last time I was there), and, of course, a nice walking trail. Not to mention, the views of the aforementioned city skyline and bridge get even more gorgeous at night, and you can see numerous people hanging out and playing music (which is never really that loud), and playing with their kids. I even saw some people fishing. Yet another 10/10 park that I definitely recommend visiting before winter hits. A hidden gem in a secluded, yet peaceful neighborhood.
