2 /5 C W: My family and I (a party of 13, comprising a mix of adults, teenagers, and children) decided to try Rabbit Hole Tavern tonight. We were excited — we hadn’t all been out together in a long time, and the good reviews made us want to try it. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve had.
The appetizers were good, but there weren’t many to choose from. Once the entrées came out, it went downhill fast. Half of our table received the wrong orders; some dishes came with ingredients we had explicitly asked to be removed, and others contained items we never requested. Additionally, my niece and nephew were the last to receive their meals, which was long after everyone else had already started eating. We ended up sharing our food with them so they wouldn’t sit there hungry.
The tipping point was my mom’s meal. She ordered a garbage plate (a Rochester native), and after a few bites, she pushed it aside — the meat was cold and tasted old. She asked to have it taken off the bill and declined ordering anything else. The waitress said she would ask. My sister ordered the same plate and agreed the meat tasted off, but she was hungry enough to deal with it. (Everyone is different)
When the bill came, the plate was still on there. We asked why, and the waitress said, “Well, there wasn’t anything wrong with it. Plates are supposed to be cold.” I’m sorry, what? No — an entire garbage plate is NOT supposed to be cold. And even if she believed that, she should’ve mentioned it being declined before handing us the bill. No manager ever came over to address the issue, either, which was even more disappointing.
We paid and left — only to have the waitress run out into the parking lot, (alone I might add - which is insane and quite the safety issue) saying they had messed up the bill and forgotten to charge us for the appetizers. So my dad had to go back inside to pay again, being taxed twice for their mistake. Given the number of issues we experienced, they should have honestly comped something and taken this as a learning opportunity on how to handle large groups and customers who arent satisfied with the food.
I don’t think the waitress was trying to be rude entirely — she just seemed overwhelmed and out of her depth. A table of our size should’ve had two servers, not one.
Overall, the food was lacking in seasoning and had a bland flavor. If that’s your thing, you might like it, but we’ve been to plenty of bar-and-grille-style spots, and this wasn’t even close.
We won’t be back.
