Spent a few hours wandering the property discovering nooks and crannies and was thoroughly enthralled from the first minute. The dedication, time, effort it must have taken is unbelievable. What an amazing place and journey of how Opus 40 came to be!
Esopus Meadows Lighthouse - Samantha M: Nice lighthouse to kayak by! They offer tours once and a while. Nearly all light houses now are automated. The keeper generation is sadly gone.
A Frosty Fest - Ulster Park Sara DeLaBruere: First time here and my husband and I were slightly disappointed. We drove through the lights which were pretty good, can’t knock that but only took us about 15 mins to get through the whole display… spending $30+ per person I don’t think is worth it. After the lights they want you to go into the shops and get some hot cocoa and yummy treats… The hot cocoa and cider doughnuts were good, but there were just two gift shops and pictures with Santa ($17) and a small train for the kids to play on while the adults chatted. Just seemed expensive for the maybe hour we were there… we checked the itinerary because we felt like we were missing something…
Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site - Hyde Park Addison Schmitt: This is an absolute must-see in the Hudson Valley. The grounds are open and free for visitors and tours through the mansion are a modest price. Purchased in the 1940s, all items within the mansion transport you to a different time. Our tour guide was Eric, and was so friendly and knowledgeable. The tour was over an hour and took us through 3 different floors of the estate and multiple rooms. Each floor was unique and preserved in a respectful and tasteful way. I can’t say enough about how special this estate is and the grounds. I highly recommend the garden that is located next to the gardeners house and shed. A beautiful place for photos. Walks about the grounds are beautiful and is a perfect way to start or end the tour. The cost per person is $15 and is very informative.
There are handicap accessible options for touring the estate that will allow access to all floors of the mansion.
Tivoli Bays - Tivoli Anthony Finegan: Nice leisurely walk. Well maintained,beautiful. Stair case is awesome, bottom has a gorgeous view.
Old Dutch Church - Kingston Natalia Hanson: Unique public events are held in and around this church. Burning of Kingston 2024 historical re-enactment was well organized and had staged street fights and a gala ball with dancing lessons and a reception in the church theater.
Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome - Red Hook Robert Pugliese: Love this place! Where else can you see WWI era planes actually fly? The people are so nice. Great amenities and food. You can even fly in an open cockpit biplane. Fun for airplane geeks and families alike! Don’t miss the shows that run on weekends all season long.
Shaupeneak Ridge Park - New Paltz Richard Ness: It’s a very nice trail for what it offers. We hiked the red, green, orange and blue trails. There were no long ascents or descents. I would rate it at moderate difficulty. Most people who can walk a couple miles should be able to do it. The red loop is very easy and brings you to a nice overlook. Almost all of it was tree covered so it should be relatively cooler in the summer. There was a lot of deadfall from the storms but all the trails we were on have been cleared. Any wet areas have small boardwalks. The pond is very pretty and looks great for paddling which I’ll try next time.
