Black Rock Lock - Buffalo (NY)

5 /5 John Hsieh: An actual functional boat lock leading to the Black Rock Canal. A great sight to see while visiting Unity Island Park. The entrance of the lock is accessible by foot paths from the park. The lock itself is access controlled, but you can still see the occasional small boats pass by. Not sure if its a great spot for fishing with all the boats passing by, but there was somebody sitting at the end of the pier trying to catch something...

5 /5 Nate Hartrich: Used this lock for the first time yesterday - some helpful info as a boater -you have to call the lock at Block Rock Lock on channel 16 on your marine radio - when you call them request a Lock Down if you are travelling North up the Black Rock Canal which is on the hour and then Lock Up if you are travelling South towards Downtown Buffalo this is done on the half hour - The process takes about 15 minutes when you are in the lock. If you are locking down the water drops 6 Feet, understand that the yellow ropes you hold onto are your life line to keep your boat against the wall. As the water drops your boat will move back and forth so make sure to have someone on the Bow on one line and someone on the Stern for the other rope. It was a neat experience for the kids and my wife. When i was a child my parents did the Locks with me so I tried not to yell as much as they did to keep the boat off the wall LOL

4 /5 Lewis Butler: Its... a lock. Coming through as the only boat and waiting to open is a bit of a buzz kill. Nylon lines to hold onto could be nicer/larger diameter.
