1 /5 Emily Anderson: Tipping etiquette needs a serious reality check in this city.
I got a regular polish pedicure from Local Honey and paid the $45 for it, which is already a STEEP price for a regular pedicure. As I was leaving, my nail tech was busy with another client, so I left my cash tip at the front desk with the receptionist. I told this to my nail tech on the way out and thanked her.
A few hours later, I get a text message from her, saying that she didn’t receive the tip. Before waiting for me to respond, she sent me the QR code to her Venmo and asked me to re-send the tip. I told her I’d left the tip at the front desk, and she just replied “sorry.”
Look - the economy is bad and we’re all just trying to make our bag. But it gets to a point, you know? It’s bad enough to pay $45 for a pedicure when it costs $12 to get some acetone and a bottle of OPI polish. It’s actually insane that the technician has access to my personal contact information, and can use it to shake me down for a tip—which, I’m happy to give, but is ultimately optional.
I’ll just start doing my toes at home and give myself the tip, no harassment included. Jeez Louise.
