06-2025 Schenectady Wheel Sculpture in Hight rate 11 location for tourist in Schenectady, NY, USAOld Stone Fort Museum - Schoharie Laurel Shuster: This fort museum was filled with military antiques and collections of oddities upstairs. The other buildings in the museum court are also historically interesting. The staff was very knowledgeable and pointed out a lot of interesting tidbits. They also had a great lunch suggestion - the Carrot Barn is a must !
Lily Park - Schoharie John Wood: This is one of my favorite places. I found this park by sheer luck while traveling through the area for work. Theres a beautiful church and graveyard with a museum and some rich local history. The park proper is beautifully maintained by Marsha a wonderful local with a love of lilys and nature and an appreciation for peace and tranquility. Theres a beautiful covered wooden bridge at one entrance to the park where you can enjoy the sounds of the river below and the birds singing their songs. While on the bridge be sure to check out the small stand at one end where a local makes beautiful flower arrangements for the public to take home. Theres also a journal for visitors to write down their thanks and thoughts. The park is about a half mile round trail beautifully manicured and maintained and lined all the way around with lilys! When in bloom this park is astoundingly beautiful! Several local businesses have created small garden spots with beautiful flowers and plants and special monuments such as a giant yin yang and a spiral of rocks where I go to meditate. Im so thankful I found this park and look forward to watching the seasons change while pondering the meaning of life surrounded by beauty and tranquility.
Palatine House 1743 Museum - Schoharie Tim Welch: Really cool medieval style German house. The house tour is free and the docent is very helpful with good historic information. Its worth a stop. Seeing the old huge beams and wattle and daub construction is well worth it.
Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site - Fort Hunter Christina Ohlrogge: They could update the contend of the information center.
F.e. add info about the first and enlarged canal in comparison to the NY state barge canal and use clear terminology.
And clean out more sections of the canal beds to have the view next to the towpath.
Secret Caverns - Howes Cave Tyler Salter: Truly awesome natural landmark. Secret Caverns is smaller and less "touristy" than Howe Caverns nearby and offers a different vibe that I personally preferred. Its located on a beautiful, secluded piece of land and the caves themselves have very little man-made alterations besides the walkways. Our tour guide was funny and entertaining, and we enjoyed our visit. The cave is very cool, and the waterfall at the end is breathtaking and caps off the tour nicely. We drove from CT to see both Secret and Howe, and Im very glad we did both. I highly recommend.
Howe Caverns - Howes Cave Steven Kazlauskas: Always an amazing adventure. I have been going since I was a kid and finally got to take my child. She is 8 years old and was full of wonder! She loved the cave kisses and the boat ride. Her favorite part was the winding way!!! The gift shop didnt hurt either! Lots of awesome swag.
Captain Bills - Watkins Glen J. Daigle: Took my sister on a beautiful scenic boat ride while we enjoyed a delicious lunch. Periodically throughout the ride, the Captain explained a lot of history about Senica Lake. It was absolutely gorgeous scenery and the perfect weather to enjoy it. Our waiter was very kind and attentive. He definitely was very good at his job. I highly recommend this boat ride to spend time with family and enjoy food and drinks. They have a really good bar on the lower deck with a variety of yummy drinks!
Templar Falls - Watkins Glen Sarah Prospero: Super cool waterfall wading/swimming hole right off the side of the road. You can park at the turnout, there’s room for a couple of cars. The finger lakes trail goes right by the falls and also to a cool old cemetery. Just watch out for ticks if you go off the trail! We found a few on my dog and son.
Rainbow Falls - Watkins Glen Sara Silva: Great place for walk through water falls, hills and breathtaking view. Lots of stairs and fair amount of distance to walk. Parking could be a problem on the weekends and holidays.
