New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center - Saratoga Springs (NY)

5 /5 Matthew Cerasia: This museum is perfect for history buffs and fans of seeing military guns/ equipment and uniforms. The museum is very well organized. They have different sections with each being a different time period and war that was being fought. The WW1 section was probably my favorite. It had an area where they made it look like you were in a trench. The information given was great and you’ll definitely leave learning something new.

5 /5 Ryan Mazierski: The New York State Military Museum presents a great collection of military artifacts and exhibits! The museum displays artifacts from every war that the US has been in. They have so much to see and there is no charge to get in. Each war is presented in very good detail. American weapons and clothing are displayed from every war, and there are also enemy uniforms and artifacts displayed. Panels also tell the stories of individual soldiers in each war who were from NY State. There were even Medals of Honor given to different soldiers that were on display. Each war display exhibit seemed to have some object I had never seen before. From the Vietnam War display were VC communication tools and Ho Chi Minh sandals. From the Korean War, a prosthetic hand. From the early Cold War a Civil Defense Sanitation Kit that was meant for use by many people for several weeks in an underground bomb shelter. Perhaps the most unique artifact was Elmer Ellsworth’s Civil War uniform. Ellsworth is often considered the first casualty of the war for the Union. He was shot and killed after he removed a Confederate flag from a hotel near Washington DC. Each war display section will have something that is hard to find somewhere or simply cannot be found anywhere else. Not all of the museum focuses strictly on military weaponry. There are excellent displays of propaganda from WW1 WW2. Medical kits from different wars are also presented. Since war is such an encompassing event for a society, they are able to display much information on how American civilians played a role in winning wars for their nation. If you are really into history you can spend a great deal of time at this museum. For most you can probably see everything in a little under two hours. The volunteers and staff do a really nice job at this museum and can help you with nearly anything. This is a museum you can’t miss!

5 /5 steve c: Incredible. I had really no expectations about this museum, and was blown away. Completely unexpected level of exhibits. And the best part. Free! I was happy to donate, but free to the public is a welcome surprise. Super personal exhibits That have retained the details, and humanity of the very people whom donated. Spent at least an hour and a half to see everything.

5 /5 Theresa St. John: This is one of my favorite museums in our area. I am passionate about our veterans and this museum is always paying tribute to them. Recently I was there and toured through the Vietnam War section with Garth LLoyd, a Vietnam vet himself. The staff is very helpful, the exhibits are periodically rotated, the exhibits cover many wars, highlights Saratoga, and this museum is free - I hope you go.

5 /5 Mike Rohan: Very well done. The historic displays make the room feel much larger than they really are. The artifacts along with the reference to their owners and/or when and where they were used brings everything to life. This museum is a jewel in a great city.
